Yeah there are $800 1 br's in my neighborhoods, however they are usually in older buildings or the apartment itself is kind of crappy or weird (radiators sticking out of the ceiling, wooden floors that don't match, bathrooms with mismatched sinks/toilets).
Generally you're going to have to pay around $900 - $1,000 to live in a decent 1 br apartment in a decent neighborhood. If you go too far below that either something is wrong with the neighborhood or something will be wrong with your apartment.
Can anyone that is renting out a room for a low price between the $500-$700 range tell me if it is fine for living conditions. I guess by that I mean living in NYC you arent really home unless its for eating or sleeping so just renting a room isnt all that of a cramp now is it? If I get accepted into one of the CUNY schools I believe I will be renting a room somewhere in brooklyn or queens, either that or go on craigslist or roommates.com and finding someone who already has an apartment and is letting others rent out a room in their 2 or 3 bd apartment which is just as cheap as well.
For just a room, you can get a pretty nice place for $700 a month. In my area some people who own an apartment in one of those new Fedder townhomes rent out rooms for about $700. If you end up getting one of those everything in the place should be pretty nice and new.
I think it's quite possible to find a share between $500 and $700 in many neighborhoods with subway access such as Midwood, Bay Ridge, Bushwick, Ridgewood, Elmhurst, etc.
There are probably even some pretty nice shares, though I did see one listed in Bushwick where you couldn't take a shower before 10am because the bathroom was too much in demand by the other roommates. So I guess just read the fine print first.
As for studios under $700, I suspect that you're going to end up in a pretty undesirable place or neighborhood at that price. Raise it to $800 and you might have a few better options. The only one ad I clicked on with photos was in Jamaica, a basement studio and it looked very very bleak.
I just got repped for this post from SIX years ago. I really hope people are not gathering info about rental prices by reading 6-year-old posts.
I doubt any of what I said then is still true today.
It's certainly still possible to get $700 or so for a single room in a shared apartment. Obviously a 1-bedroom apartment for $700 was always fairly impossible.
In 2006 I sublet a studio in Harlem for $700...was that real? It sounds like fantasy now.
