I don't think I have ever actually driven through Central Park in my life other than going through the Transverses.
Who drives through Central Park? What's the purpose of that?
Lots of people do, otherwise you're stuck going up and down to reach the Transverses. That's the only thing that sucks about Central Park. Going East and West and vice versa is a pain.
It was basically a cabbie short cut. I drive in NYC, and I don't think I've ever driven on the park drives (I use the transverses all the time, but as mentioned above, that's a different matter.)
If there's anyone mourning this development it's the cabbies.

True. I drove a cab for a while, and being able to go north and south through the park made life a lot easier.
