When tenants did it, they would pass the word ("The fire is tonight") and go to bed fully clothed and with shoes on.
I dont know if that is an urban legend or what. I have my doubts about that myself. I had relatives who were burnt out and they ran out barefoot afraid for their lives. Then they left NYC, their jobs, extended family and moved to Florida and Texas.
The rock group In Living Color, had a song about the demage of arson. Remeber the song " Open Letter "to a landlord about arson. They were from the Bronx.

I think that was a typical account, but obviously there were lots of different scenarios.

I heard that account. Saw it written down in books. Yet, I think its something a person repeated without actual evidence. More like people blaming the savages of the Bronx. More being Suspicion of the victims rather then blaming the real culprits.

Like blaming a victim of rape for wearing sexy outfits. If anything maybe an arsonist tipped off the building to get out tonight. Yet, if true not everyone in the building would get the memo.

Certainly not. As you said, the Landlords were the main purveyors of arson.
It is very sympathetic to the people living there. A great read.
. I once read everything I could on the subject. The several books I read also mention the same thing and they mention it using the same reference. Seemingly they repeat the same reference of a family fully dressed with luggage infront of a building. What family and what address ? Did anyone speak to them and if so why did not the police get their witness statements or the insurance company. I think its like a big foot sighting.

Strikes me as plausible though. If a planned fire is what stands in the way of getting out of a crumbling tenement into a bland but modern project, well ....
Has anyone ran across statistics about how many people died in the waves of arson? This is something I never hear of but people must have died. I wonder if any of the landlords were charged with murder.
Good point. I can't believe people try to justify the arson
