New York STATE may be a terrible place to retire but New York CITY is a terrific place to retire IF you have your housing situation settled.

There's still a chance I'll retire within NYS or move but stay connected to NYC since my house will be paid off anyway. My pension is tax free here, so there are incentives for me to stay in NYS. I'll just ignore the gun laws.

Yesterday on HBO's VICE they reported that NYS has the worst income distribution of the 50 states...dead last.

when we were going to relocate to the house we owned in pa , housing was not really cheaper for us .

here in nyc my wife and i live alone and have a 2 bedroom 2 bath apartment in a lovely building with a pool and tennis courts .

all the kids are local and no one stays here but us .

in pa we needed a 3000 sq ft house to hold 13 of us at times . so the house actually cost us more a year .

Outside of the beautiful carribean islands, nyc is the perfect place to retire. As long as you have the money to do so. Elderly people shouldn’t be driving so public transportation is a great feature here for retires. Also all the various condos/co-ops and not have to worry about maintenance.

I plan to retire, sell my home and move into a nice 2 bedroom condo with amenities here. I would hopefully make a killing on my home sale, downsize and live the life not only with my 401k/stocks/pension but the profit from my home
