I think it’s accurate to say words can have their common use definitions change. It’s at least not a black and white issue as there is the Lower East Side Tenement Museum which definitely has a more narrow use of the term. You can both be right. Hug it out. Put me in the middle. It will be the best sandwich of our lives.

It's like that bodega debate awhile ago.
But I did not know that tenement at one time meant simply apartment building.
Or that it's official definition simply means apt. building.
That was something new to me that I just learned.

But I never said he's wrong that it could broadly be used to mean any apartment building. I'm just saying that it's very commonly used to have a definition more narrow than just "apartment building".

He's talking about everyday, "man on the street", popular vernacular definition.
Because he's correct in saying no one in h*** is going to call Trump Tower a tenement.
I guess what it is, is a luxury tenement (apt bldg) but others will then exclaim that's an oxymoron!
