Really? Last time I was there I did not notice any. Of course I was not exactly thinking about them. Here in DC they have gone the way of the dodo bird.

Oh ... can't be as cool as you.

More seriously, I lived in New York for many years. During the 80s- before the computer modem became commonplace and fax machines were unreliable- the City was awash with them.

Wow. Who would've thought. Because I sure as h*** don't see these messengers as much as say the 90's.
As a pedestrian, I had to look out for them more than the cars when crossing the street.

That's because you are likely looking for old school bike messengers who mainly delivered documents. As noted in links today those messengers deliver all sorts and often use those larger square or rectangular backpacks.

Everything from food to "same day" Amazon or whatever deliveries can go by bike if they are able to handle.

Also in the past ten or twenty years NYC has grown far more bike friendly. It is often faster and easier for someone on bike to get somewhere than delivery by motor vehicle. Especially with all the new bike lanes, locking posts, and laws mandating buildings give access to bikes.

A lot of messengers and food caterers use the subway to make their deliveries now. SDS, RDS messengers I see frequently, and sometimes even the bike messengers get tired of pedaling and jump on the train to make their deliveries.
