That is the stupidest comment I've read in a while. Yuppies and hipsters can't be compared to ethnic groups. Last time I checked there wasn't one country or region that all yuppies and hipsters descended from.

DITC..I do not complain about my community....however I acknowledge the problems that we face here, discuss them, and work towards making life better. There is no complaining on my part, but there is an identification and discussion about the real problems in my community...there is a difference. I CHOOSE to be here not because it is the easy thing to do...but because it is the right thing to do.

Only someone around 14 years old thinks that a neighborhood like Mott Haven (and Bushwick, where most 'hipsters' are) should keep its 'historical and original' ghetto character. Is that what you are trying to say?

The more educated people (either White or Black or Yellow) move to these neighborhoods the better in the end, even for the people living in those housing projects. Look at the changes in Harlem. Now is so much fun to visit, without feeling in danger like when it was really a ghetto kind of place. I can't say the same of much of Bed-Stuy or Brownsville, for example. But I am more willing to visit Mott Haven or Bushwick these days.

Just curious as to what changes in Harlem makes it more fun to visit nowadays for you? Also, what makes Bed-Stuy, for example, a place that you would not want to visit?

I apologize if this strays from the original topic.

That's a good question. Although not directed to me, I will also add my 2 cents. I think Harlem is more fun because it is far safer, therefore you can actually go there and enjoy the unique amenities and culture that were always there, except now you can enjoy them without the real fear/danger of being a victim. That in and of itself to me makes it more fun. Bed-stuy however, does not have the amenities, history and cultural events that Harlem has..so although Bed-Stuy has improved over the years, crime is still an issue there, and there isn't really anything fun about the place...at least in my opinion.

It's amazing to me how many ignorant people there are on this board who want to demonize every white newcomer to this city based on the way they dress, the music they listen to, and the neighborhoods in which they can afford to live.

Unbelieveable.
Most people I know have grandparents and great grandparents who were born in this country. Very few of them "flaunt" their culture - why would they? I have a couple of friends who are very loud and proud about their Irish heritage, but if you're from Connecticut and your parents are from Virginia, and even your grandparents are from Michigan, how Irish are you? You're American!

My point exactly. I do not closely identify with any culture as myself and my family have been born in America for four generations and have effectively bred out of any single cutlure/country/ethnicity. I am just American, not english/irish/italian/german/swiss/norwegian-American.

Apparently it is a problem now if we don't come from a single ethnic background?

This is offensive and ignorant, as are many posts on this thread. Now that many of you have had your fill of yuppie bashing, I think maybe we should start a new thread and bash a new group of people and give this one a rest.

Well compared to the old days, it just looks alot more cleaner. There is less graffiti and the annoyance of tagging. Less abandonment. Empty lots have been built and still are. More diversity in people. And the best part about Harlem is that I love the older NYC buildings, and Harlem sure has plenty of that. I am sure if you told me to walk and take photos of Harlem in the 80's I will not do it. Bed-Stuy has a long way to go before I embark on my explorations of the neighborhood, even though it has some nice old architecture to see.

Oh you haven't heard? You haven't seen? Harlem is not as "dark" as it used to be. It's more "light" now hence "safer".

Although bedstuy has some "light" areas, it is surrounded by "sketchy" nabes...... hence less "desirable"
