One of my closest coworkers is an AA from Alabama who regales me with tales of growing up in the south. Another one, succesfull and accomplished, is from DC.

I know a number of AA from work. Quiet a few also live in my neighborhood in QUEENS. I guess that area of queens is one of the last bastations of middle/upper middle class families who migrated north. My block is half AA and half West Indian. The four houses that were recently sold in the neighborhood were all sold by AAs to Indians. Many AAs that I encountered are atleast 2 generations (one was 4 generations!l) who have lived in the same house. I have 3 soul food resteraunts walking distance from my house. My hair dresser and the owner of the nail salon that I visit are all AAs. Happy to report that they also provide wonderful service!
Yeah, I know lots of AAs from the greater Jamaica area

Just visit Resorts Casino in Queens and you will see mostly AA's. Where they get the money to gamble all week is another topic all together.
I don't know anyone that gambles. But many AA are living in long paid off houses and actually earn decent salary.
My coworker's parents inherited their Bedstuy brownstone home. Retired from NYPD/NYC board of education. No doubt they have alot of discretionary income. The co worker is in his late 20s and is earning over $120k yearly. I am sure when people see him they question his ability to afford the things he does.
I know a few whose household income is north of $200k. Some have very little expense.
My sweet AA, long retired neighbor is sitting on $2 million of paid off real estate. (3 houses) One she doesn't even bother to rent (bad prior tenant/too much aggravation). The other 2 she collects about $6000 monthly, in addition to her pension. Another retired neighbor has 2 homes worth over $1.3 million combined. They live in one and don't even bother renting the second.
Don't underestimate the power of not having to pay rent or mortgage. Every single AA that I have spoken to in my neighborhood lives in a house that was paid for ages ago.
I chuckle at the projection that some do on CD. Some have such grand air of their position in life in relation to others they view less than. They fail to comprehend that many are way more comfortable than they think. Not everyone needs to walk around tooting their own horn.
