This post is confusing. 32bj is the apartment building union, no?
This increase is to keep out $10.50 per hour contracts. Fast food is making $15, airport is more vital, why not an even $20? Tickets should not go up,since gas has stayed at an ok level, but ticket prices never got lower.
Cuomo wants to leave a big mark, while Christie is a big mark (skid mark)
So we gonna ***** that responsible hard working adults can make life a little easier for their families. Gtfoh.
Hoorah again for the working class.it keeps getting better and better. Now maybe people can lean off EBT .
Like 1199, 32BJ have their mitts in various businesses.
Unions bring out the vote. They form a significant portion of the Democratic base, so Democratic politicians are of course friendly to people who vote for them.
Why wouldn't they be?
Can anyone here please tell me how they are negatively affected by workers at Port Authority getting a raise? I certainly am not, and I likely travel more than most people on this forum. If they get a raise, great. The ticket is the least of travel expenses, and anyone who seriously travels isn't going to notice the additional fees.
But mostly importantly, people getting a raise on their job in NYC should not be reduced to a right wing/left wing political debate, nor should it be used to fear monger.
Unfortunately, that's exactly what it's been for the past few years.
Government union jobs don't just disappear, and the airports of NY and NJ can't just move out of town. And more power to those airport workers if they are able to get the raise.
i am not referring to just gov't unions . unions inflated wages for jobs that should never have had compensation levels that high .
many of those jobs are long gone today and to compare wages today with artificially inflated wages makes little sense

Not the government or the academic ones.
And truthfully not the entertainment industry ones.
Manufacturing can be outsourced to other nations and it was really the manufacturing unions that got decimated. Government and academic functions, no, and the entertainment industry, no.
Come to think of it, the telephone industry is highly unionized, as are utilities like Con Edison and the gas company? Are those jobs gone? No.
The airline industry has always been unionize, like all aspects of transportation. Are those jobs gone? No.

You don't know do you?
Verizon, Con Ed and other public utilities have been shedding jobs for years now.
Call Verizon for a service appointment and see what date you get; something at least two weeks (or more) away. Union workers for Verizon went on strike twice recently and got *nothing*, ended up going back to work and basically accepting original contract they first turned down.
Spectrum? Remember those workers who went out on strike? Last time one checked they *still* are out and this has been going on for > year.

No one has to have Verizon service, it doesn't matter if they shed workers. Ditto Spectrum. Even for wi-fi, you don't have to deal with either of those two companies (AT&T, Verizon and others can supply equipment to turn your home into a hotspot). One can get TV from DirectTV (owned by AT&T) or DishNetwork. Or just streamonline.
Con Edison and electrical and gas companies MUST maintain a certain level of service for public safety reasons. I've family and friends who worked in public utilities such as Con Ed and no one has talked of mass layoffs.
Academic unions have expanded, government and transportation unions are going nowhere, and the entertainment industry is heavily unionized.

First, you do realize hundreds of New York residents *still* have landline service and thus "need" Verizon. That and or for other reasons they have chosen to remain with that company. So get off your GD high horse about telling people what they should or shouldn't have.
Two, no one said ConEdison had "mass layoffs", but they just as with every other company/business has taken advantage of technology and other means to enhance employee productivity while also reducing head counts where possible.
Just stop it; unions have no powers in NJ or NY other than what governors give, and that is where the real problem lies.
Chris Christie apparently had no problems telling 32BJ to go pound salt. Cuomo OTOH is up for re-election in several weeks and needed something fresh to add for his victory lap over beating the Nixon woman.
The governors = figureheads
