Manhattan residents long have considered the city as center of universe. As a result often looked upon "bridge and tunnel" people (basically anyone ranging from New Jersey to Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island, or Long Island) as somehow inferior.
New Jersey is likely singled out because it has mostly always been a rural/suburb sort of place that obviously lacks the refinement and culture found in Manhattan.
This plays out in many areas even the "Mafia". One thing the Sopranos got right (among some others) was the rivalry between NJ families/crews and those across the river in Manhattan or NYC.
To be fair plenty of young people and others back and the day and now come into the city from NJ when they want some action. Obviously nightlife options in many NJ towns isn't going to approach and or is same as what can be found in the city.
Coming from SI am here to tell you we've never had any problems with New Jersey. Going back decades when the only way to get between NJ and SI was via boat/ferry there was plenty of back and forth between.
As an immigrant from another country I have no issue with New Jersey whatsoever. It's just a piece of land and a place that is close to work like any other.
When I moved there I got all kinds of comments from upper class New Yorkers making over 200K per year, that have no clue on life whatsoever.
"Why are you moving to Jersey? I live in a penthouse in Chelsea, why not Chelsea?"
"Jersey uhhhh!! At least move to Williamsburg or Dumbo if you can't afford Manhattan!"
"But.... if you move to NJ you'll miss out on Central Park, I run there before work everyday"
"You should just get a better job or ask your wife to earn more money"
"Don't you have parents that can pay your rent?!"
Also remember until recently and still to some extent today NJ is home to some rather polluting/stinky industry. Chemical plants, oil refineries, etc..
Growing up on SI you knew which way the wind was blowing via smells coming from Jersey. Then even as a youngster learned to hold my nose or bug whoever was driving to close car windows when driving through/near certain parts of NJ.
Today even still when going through or whatever parts of NJ turn the AC onto "recirculate" in order not to breathe in the stench. *LOL*
Jersey sucks. The bar closes early. Their govenour always has an issue. Their taxes are too damn high. They taking our jobs. They seem to be 2 steps back on trends. And Jersey sucks! Staten island should be part of jersey.
