Just thought I'd mention that I saw "Uncle Vanya" at Hunter College, curious because it has gotten such rave reviews.

Of course, it's Chekhov, so not everyone's cup of tea, not for people who like Disney musicals - it's basically people sitting around talking. But on top of its being great, it's also affordable ($37), and wonderfully intimate - it's in the round with only five rows, so no bad seats. It just got extended, so lots of tickets available. It's the sort of thing that makes people appreciate NYC. Also the sort of thing for people who are annoyed at $100+ for orchestra seats on Broadway these day.

Yes, their library was awesome. I recall the bottles of Mountain Dews and cigarettes filters around finals that previous students used to stay up all night. I worked full time in the evenings and sometimes would spend an overnight at the library to study. I would also meet my ex girlfriend at the library for a make out session while studying. We might take that to the auditorium in the old Hunter building. Oh the memories of youth...

Yes, Uncle Vanya at Hunter is an excellent, intimate production. I love Jay O. Sanders and would see him in anything. (He plays Vanya.)

I can't wait to see what's next at Hunter!

Clarallel,

I passed on freebie tickets for it. I have seen SOOO many Vanyas that my poor brain and patience could not handle another. I don't like the play and I am always astounded how many people DO. By orders of magnitude, this is not the best Chekov...too "whiney" for me.
I always want to smack Vanya "upside the head."

But your review makes me think I might have acted hastily.

I remember being able to reserve those little study rooms in the library.

On your recommendation, I will give Vanya another chance and we will see the Hunter production on Wednesday.

^^^^ Great! Get there early to get a good seat because it's general admission. But really, every seat is fine.
