Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that the minimum wage increase will take effect on New Year’s Eve, rising to $15 for large employers in New York City and continuing to rise across the state. The increases are part of a scheduled phase-in that was passed as part of the 2016-17 state budget.

“With the historic increase in the minimum wage, New York continues to set a national example in the fight for economic justice,” Cuomo said in a statement on Dec. 26. “In New York, we believe in a fair day’s pay for a fair day’s work and we are proud to be stepping up for hardworking families and making a real difference in the lives of New Yorkers.” We won’t stop until every New Yorker is paid a fair wage they deserve.”

Mouth of Albany like every other democrat politician in this state is rather good at giving away other people's money.

However as Margaret Thatcher pointed out, the problem with giving away other people's money is you sooner or later run out of it.

The only real beneficiary will be the government, via increased tax revenues.
The worker's gain will be swallowed up by inflation that will follow the increased labor cost - which will be shifted back to him. Where else do employers get the money to pay their employees, if not the customer?

SB already starts baristas out at $9-$14 per hr. So now those at the lower end will get a big raise, and the higher not so much.

What SB likely may just do is what they've been doing at many stores for some time now; cutting down hours.

At one point it was easy to find a SB open to 11PM or even later. Now far as the UES goes think the only place open past 10PM on weekdays is Lexington and 85th.

I am so glad to hear this. In a city like NY our minimum wage should be more like $30.

This is a win for the people!

Until employers start automating these jobs out of existence.

Some of the hardest jobs are those that pay min wage.
Don't be so judgmental. Not everyone is from the means to be able to go get an advanced degree.
You're making double at the example you just gave. Who'd choose a job making $15 when they could get $30
Explain why layoffs are coming.

During these times of change, employees are really getting taken care of. Yay for the working class.

These powers that be, making millions off of peoples backs, can now share a little.

15 years ago, $18 per hour was still not good enough. A typical family with 2 kids still would require both parents to work. So,$15 is a start in the right direction.

Starbucks can afford paying more, you kidding me,? It is all up to the owner ,if they can take a 3 0/0 (?) Loss in profits.

Only the wimps will raise already high prices,to make up for that missing 3 0/0 profit.
