How long were you living in the building and were you paying your rent on time?

Those 2 questions should be the basis if the LL is OK with having you move to another unit such as if you have been living there for 2 years and never missed a payment or was never late on the rent the LL should not have an issue with it as long as you kept the current apartment in good shape.

Yikes. That's not a very good track record.

I switched apartments in my building. Nothing was checked. But then again I never was late paying rent, and am a quiet tenant.

I too switched apartments in a building that I lived in the 1990s. As far as I know my credit was never checked either (for the switch) and I too was never late paying rent, etc.
