i've gotten into a routine of using headphones every evening because that's when my upstairs neighbor is the noisiest (slightly annoying when it's like 9 pm and i want to wind down).... and then once it's time to sleep, i'll put in ear plugs.

pain in the booty i tell ya
but she's not the loudest upstairs neighbor that has ever existed. i give that honor to my friends upstairs neighbor who likes to stomp and roll marbles at 4 am

If you go over to the renting forum, you will see tons of posts on this topic. I can relate, my best advice is never live below someone.

I understand why my parents insisted on a detached house now.

I have a couple of elephants above me, but luckily they don’t move around much. The noisiest they get is around 5 am, well before I get up. If I didn’t take measures, I would be woken up by them every day. My magic potion is Mack’s silicon earplugs with a really powerful white noise machine on top.

We had some obnoxiously loud neighbors a few houses down from us. They rented the house from an investor. The house was the gathering place for all of their family and friends every weekend until 4AM. After months of myself and several other neighbors asking them to please turn down the volume past 1am and having them ignore us as well as inaction by police, we saw them bringing in materials to renovate the basement. They told a neighbor of mine "we have a lot of family, so they have to stay with us". I immediately filled out a complaint citing fire safety and insufficient points of egress with the Department of buildings. A few weeks later they had notices taped to their door from the city. The landlord then evicted them shortly after. Our block is back to being tranquil.
