I guess it depends on who you ask. A lot of people will argue because we have welfare in the U.S. that are economy/way of life isn't truly capitalist. I live down South and so maybe it's viewed differently but they tend to consider countries like the U.K., France, Sweden, Denmark, socialist. Yes, these countries have a free market but due to more generous welfare systems, they are seen as socialist.

Usually people tend to pick the countries with the worst economies like Greece and say, "Is that what you want?!" LOL. I think many people down South would see the welfare programs in countries like Denmark and call them anti-capitalist.

But socialism is state control of the market, which the Bordic countries don't have much of.

For what I put in bold, I guess I've been seeing what's socialist as something else. I always thought that this is what communism is and that socialist countries allow a free market (no government intervention for the most part) but just have generous welfare systems. Interesting...I will take your definition and NYwriter's into consideration because never mind. Just looked it up. Wow...learn something new every day. I guess I've gotten so used to people around me calling those countries socialist that I assumed that's what they are. Apparently socialism does equal communism, which those countries are not. Learn something new every day.

As for Bernie Sanders, his policies go against the status quo. For one, if he were to end the war on drugs/change our criminal justice system, he'd be going against a system that targets the poor/blacks and Hispanics. This system makes a ton of money (for-profit and is on the increase) all the while enslaving people. We're talking about loss of job opportunity, disenfranchisement, breaking up families, etc. And this issue isn't left/right because both sides invest in the private prison industry. It's pretty disgusting. Wasn't it cuomo who said 1/3 people in the U.S. has a record? That's crazy! In terms of what's considered advanced economies, we are the only country that criminalizes people the way we do.

There are also the other policies.

You have a lot of stupid people who have never been anywhere.

Europe is capitalist you have to PAY for things, people do make more money than others, yes there is income inequality, yes they have big private corporations, etc.

Karl Marx despised socialism only slightly less than he despised Kapitalism. Socialism is a half hearted attempt to appease the wronged masses with a few pittances to avoid Communism, with the Kapitalists imprisoned or executed, and ALL the means of production returned to their rightful owners, the people.

No thinking person equates Socialism with Communism.

Most Democratic politicans have roughly the same platform as Bernie. He just gets made fun of for being an ideologue who seems to swear by socialism. And a lot of liberals don't like him because he comes off as "socialism first", over social issues.
