Doesn’t add up. A guy you don’t like randomly smacks up your car in the middle of the night and you talk to him and shake hands? He might be the killer, but the “why” is still fishy as far as I’m concerned.

Yeah...if you got bored you could probably just hop in your car and waltz up to the front door of your local mob family boss in the middle of the night, introduce yourself, and have a nice chat and shake hands. Just have a freindly chat....maybe ask him where Hoffa is buried. I mean...it's not like those guys are paranoid and heavily armed and anything baaaaad might happen. Nooooo! I am sure people do that all of the time.
the mob is very much alive. they can’t just drop bodies like they used to due to PD’s modern technology, which is why they’ve been quiet for the past 3 decades

One, Don Calli knew who this guy was; otherwise it is highly unlikely he would have gone to the door *unarmed* like he did totally leaving his guard down.
Two, the guy staged an accident by hitting Don Calli's ride; that noise is what got the Calli household's attention; then came a knock on door.
While still the safest of all NYC boroughs many homes on the Rock have cameras; this for just normal residents who have nothing to do with the "mob" or whatever. There have been incidents (home invasions, etc....) but increasingly you're seeing lots of property crime on SI. People stealing every GD thing on your property that isn't nailed down. Everything from a kid's red wagon (he used it on in paper route), to a dog (teacup Yorkie IIRC) snatched off a front porch. These thefts were all caught on camera. Plus a wide array of package, Christmas lights/holiday decorations, and again a whole assorted array of thefts of anything not nailed down on your property.
Given the rural/suburban vibe people use cameras same as many apartment dwellers in the city or elsewhere; you ring their bell (especially late/over night), and they glace at the camera and not know who the eff you are; they're not opening the door. This or will have their guard up....
As *hits* or whatever you want to call this killing go; it was almost pretty standard "mob" practice. Obviously a total stranger isn't going to get close enough to a don, cappo or whoever in order to fire at point blank range. That is unless person or persons in question are known to whomever, and or they can catch them unawares.
And that makes sense to you? A guy he doesn’t like randomly smashes into his car at night and he goes out simply to chat with him and shake hands? If that’s really how this went down, this Cali sure didn’t operate like the steely-eyed tough guys who were never off guard who preceded him.

Someone you know regardless how much you like the guy crashes into your ride; what are you going to do? Stay inside until LE arrives and let them handle things while you remain locked inside? How does that look or work?
Am more than unusually sure late Mr. Calli didn't see it coming, not out of the suspect otherwise he'd never have gone outside, much less answer the door. Especially with the wife and kids inside.
As for shaking hands; I do with guys I don't like all the time. It's more of a respect or whatever thing; that and don't want to get into a beef over some one taking offence when I refuse his right hand.
Normally refusing to shake a guy's hand is the ultimate insult; best reserved when you're turning your back on someone, and or otherwise cutting them off totally.
Being as all this may; again we may never get a straight answer. One person is up in Moravian, the other now has lawyered up and clammed up.
According to published reports LE had the guy on their radar because he seems a bit "off"; not just a random eejit, but has done things that made them wonder.

I think they just realized that more money can be made through cooperation rather than through warfare.

So called "Mafia" realized that fact ages ago now. Though fiction you even hear guys in the Sopranos mention how bad for business violence can be, so they avoid whenever possible.
Violence brings LE and political heat, which in turn makes it difficult to do business, so it is best avoided when possible.
