Hello Natural Hair Girls,

I have natural hair...kinky natural hair and I am looking for someplace good and hopefully inexpensive i can start going to about 3x a month. I have come to the conclusion that I have no idea how to really take care of my hair and I don't want to. I rather have someone else take care of it for me and I don't mind adjusting my budget to make it happen. I would love to get a deep condition and some flat braids or twists for under $40 (if possible, and i mean like 5-6 flat braids nothing fancy). And a salon that can also press hair without burning it off would be great, maybe for $50-$60 if that is reasonable?

If my price point is not right please educate me, I have no idea what is reasonable as I haven't been to a salon in over 4 years so I'm just pulling these prices out of my bottom!

Does anyone have any recommendations? I was looking online but it is hard to tell who is good and who isn't and a lot of the prices are not available or around $150-$200 (midtown, UES and UWS). I'm near Harlem but I'd travel for a good deal and a good salon!

Thank you so much for your help!

You might try asking at Ouidad and Devachan.

Try Hair Styling by Joseph on East 39th. It is the oldest Black Family owned salon in NYC. It has a long history of clients from the Who's who of Black celebrities, business and television along with the working class. Great atmosphere and they also do natural hair.

If you're looking for a quality hair stylist, who is good at styling natural hair, you're going to pay at least $125- $200. I can't really recommend any salons in NYC, but I tend to prefer salons that only use Aveda products.

Hair Girl Regina Pearl
Not as cheap as you ask, but you also said 3x a month. Regina can do it once every two months and it will last.
She trims it so you can literally wash and go or you can get flat twists that last and she will talk to you about your hair care and it will grow healthy so you really won't need frequent visits. Her salon is on 24th street

Thank you for the recommendations!

And yes I have been looking and I noticed that $100-$150 is on the low end price wise. I think I will need to adjust my frequency then to every 2-3 weeks. I rather pay a little more and find someone who knows how to really work with natural hair and who can teach me how to take care of it myself as well.

OMG I have to complain.
I went to a salon in Harlem that I found on yelp and it was HORRIBLE. I'm going to another salon in a few weeks to compare before I but this review on Yelp because maybe my perspective is wrong and all stylists work like this.

I went to Honey Salon which I do not recommend getting your hair done by Brenda. I got there happy wanting someone to help and give me ideas on which products to use, they quoted me $65 on the phone because i wanted my hair pressed/shampooed and conditioned. (easier for me on vacation ) The stylist was uninterested, up-sold me to $155 to have it cut and conditioned (because of how much the price increased i thought was a magic conditioner sent by angels that would make my hair soft and healthy) well it wasn't. I told her that my hair was breaking off and i wanted to get it done in the salon every 2 weeks with someone who knows how to work with natural hair to stop it from breaking off. Obviously she wasn't paying attention.

What is funny is she thought I was going to go back. I need to learn to speak up for myself because obviously my method of letting professionalsdo what they do isn't working.

She put the angel conditioner on - I was under the hair dryer for 15 min then she washed my hair. While she was washing my hair instead of untangling it every time there was a knot she would rip it apart. It got so bad even the stylist next to her asked if she wanted to use some of his product to help with the untangle process.

She parted my hair in 4 sections then used a brush to rip my hair out from crown to the ends. After every section (I guess that was her process to untangle hair) she would pull my hair from the brush and throw it on the floor. I was looking around and wondering if this is the new thing...do all stylists work like this now? Well obviously not because the guy doing hair in front of me put his client under the dryer after parting her hair in sections, then when she was done he was slowly combing out her hair before brushing and blow drying it and guess what, she had no hair loss.

Then at the end I asked her to wrap my hair because it was raining outside, she asked if I wanted her to use hair pins and I said yes... then she informed me that would be a $2 extra charge...and yes I gave her a tip because no matter what I tip service workers.

I was actually thinking of going back to the salon because the guy doing hair in front of me seemed to know what he was doing, as well as another stylist next to me. But I don't want to give my money to anyone that works there...I had such a bad experience I'm never going back.

It is stupid because if they placed me with someone who was good I would have probably spent upwards of $2k (about $100 every 2 weeks) a year there, not including tips and I tip good for good work!

I found one of the best salons here that worked with relaxing hair that is why I started this thread hoping to find someone great with natural hair.
