That has nothing to do with any regulations, that's just the nature of NYC where people are expected to spend money. Those business owners push for that minimum because they can, not because they would lose money if they didn't. It's a remnant of the days when there was a per transaction fee, but they decided to just keep the minimum. Just like when airlines jacked up ticket prices for high fuel costs, they didn't lower the ticket price when oil prices crashed instead they pocket the difference. National chains, like Stop n SHop I mentioned, will let you charge any amount you want. They don't play games they just want a smooth transaction so you keep coming back. Heck I just bought a 69 cent roll of tape at home depot in Manhattan with my credit card

Ok well almost all independent stores, non Dollar Tree, in the Bronx have a minimum. This is just reality. Hopefully these stores are squeezed out by chains soon lol.

I doubt many of the independent store shoppers are poor. They're buying tchotchkes in a store.

I am a user, and I would gladly wait a bit longer to have fewer cars circling around empty, loitering and idling. You can see where the car is on the app and wait in your office or somewhere until it comes out. Can't get any more pampered than that.

One day, Uber/Lyft will run robot MPVs that will shuttle multiple people in NYC with the car restrictions and more profit for them not paying drivers. Only UberBlack will be left with human drivers. The really need to have higher standards for drivers, some drivers just not very good and often get lost costing me time. My wife doesn't like riding uber at all, says they all smell funny.

Uber and Lyft drivers all ought to be lined up and shot.

They don't know where they're going, do stupid things on road and in general just cannot hack driving in the city.

Last night was going along East 79th to the FDR. Was behind a white car with a plate beginning with "T", which always is a bad sign....

As line of cars makes the right off 79th onto service road and prepare to merge into FDR traffic this effing eegit Uber driver in front of me has his left turn signal on then *STOPS* just as guard rail ends. He then proceeds to sit there with his left signal still flashing doing God knows what.

Traffic was heavy and now all of us behind this Einstein must bust a move by swerving directly into right lane of traffic from the merge lane period.

lol... I don't think I have ever had a white Uber driver. They are usually Southeast Asian (e.g. Indian) and those guys can't stop talking. Either they are yacking with me or yacking on the damn phone in that ear piece. If I get an African guy they tend to be the least accommodating. You have to keep tapping on the trunk for them to even open it and they won't come out and help you with your things, whereas the Southeast Asian guys usually do. The African guys also tend to drive quite wild, so I tend not to tip them well if at all. I've also gotten a few Dominicans and they tend to be quiet - I chalk it up to either their English isn't that great yet, or they're not sure what I am and so they just remain quiet - if they think I'm Dominican or know that I speak Spanish, they too will talk my head off.

FYI a Southeast Asian is a Thai or Vietnamese. You mean South Asian.

Historically I'm thinking about the Indian influence in Southeast Asia, but yes that's what I meant to say.
