Can't have cake and eat it too. If we wanted those 25,000 six figure Amazon jobs then we better lube up for housing costs that take advantage of this.
I'm not a supporter of affordable housing quite frankly. It exacerbates the problem for those of us who pay market rate rent. If all works as planned I will be purchasing soon. The prices for market rate places are simply out of control.

Affordable is actually a small part of the problem. The real issue keeping housing prices so high up is the increasingly stringent and expensive permit process and restrictive zoning. In most cities it is simply a supply-side problem.

Like magic, Sydney is affordable now. There should be a backlash soon from NIMBYs, and in about five years Sydney again should be topping the rankings of the most expensive cities in the world. Like clockwork.

Supply definitely has a strong affect, but Sydney is not affordable. It went from extremely unaffordable to somewhat extremely unaffordable which was decried as a disaster by some because it meant a couple of years where housing prices were stagnant or went down a little. The prices might not have kept on going on its extreme upward growth, which is better, but in 2019 posted something like an order of magnitude difference between median home cost to median income ratio (something upwards of 10:1) which was something severely worse than NYC's usual 4 or 5 to 1. Building more supply is definitely one of the things that should be done though.
And I'll say again that you are completely wrong. People keep trying to fit a square peg in a round hole, there's too much demand and too little supply in NYC. Nobody has a god given right to live here. There are literally thousands of legitimately affordable towns across the United States, but everyone tries to cram into a dozen or so top destinations.
You can ease the supply crunch by relaxing zoning laws to turbo charge development, but then all the NIMBY's start crying and nothing changes
Opinion: Completely wrong? Depends on which side of the fence you stand.
That would be great if the states pulled together and connected high speed trains to main city hubs.
