What a fool to request a bench trial The law was clear here and any judge worth his robes would've convicted him. His only chance of acquittal was via jury nullification. I certainly would've voted to acquit. If his attorney recommended a bench trial he should be disbarred for legal misrepresentation.

Abel wanted the bench trial and the attorneys supported him, stating that the AA and Latino communities of the bronx wouldnt support him because of his LGBT status

Had he chosen the jury trial, things may have been different. Prepare for that book to be slammed

What fools! It's way easier to convince 1 out of 12 laymen than it is to convince a single judge who actually know a the law. A hung jury would have also be a victory for him as the prosecutor likely wouldn't have chosen to keep retrying him.

it also didn't help that his lawyers kept pissing off the judge by repeatedly interrupting the prosecutor at points.

Bench trials are only useful for the Bonfire of the Vanities type of defendant. A rich white guy going on trial in the Bronx would be well advised to go that route. Many minority Bx juries would be chomping at the bit to burn the Great White defendant regardless of his guilt or innocence.

This kid should have stuck with the jury.

doesn't help that as the case came closer, more facts came out about the boy, that he had brought a compound bow and arrow, and that he was practicing with the knife.. But there are people that made a petition to convince the judge to give Abel YO status.

Watch the judge give the middle finger to that petition. Kid's going to serve from 10-50 years

Best case scenario for him. (With YO Status) Is 1-4 years (He'll get out in 2020-2023)
Worse case scenario for him (Judge Slams him hard) He'll have to serve 50 years (He'll get out in 2069) 69
