I got a mailing from one of those alternatives, Clean Choice Energy, and naturally it sounds reasonable to get power from "100% clean, pollution-free" sources. But is it legit? Is it a rational choice? These days we're all open to choosing alternatives to Ma Bell, but it's not quite the same with Con Ed.

Not all ESCOs are scams, but it’s likely that most are.

Anything I've ever heard of outside of Con ED within NYC, was a scam.

Outside counties like LI, have reputable private utility companies.

Most of the bill is distribution and con Ed holds the rights to that ...the power portion you can find options to is actually very small

You are basically paying two companies, one of which is ConEd that you being paying all along. There is no competitive price for electricity, ConEd is ultimately the one provide the electric supply.

You can find a list of ESCOs online. Clean Choice is not only one. I have not found them to be better than ConEd.

If you examine your electric bill (ConEd, National Grid, etc...) you'll find a huge part is from distribution and or very little to do with actual rates paid for power.

Thus in NYC at least ESCOs have little savings to offer because as noted by several posters the last mile (distribution) still is handled by ConEd or National Grid. Those rates are what they are and it doesn't matter how "clean", "green" or whatever the source of your electricity.
