And everyone, rightly, turned out to cheer for Armstrong, Aldrin, and Collins. It was an amazing accomplishment. We honored people like Lindbergh, Eisenhower, Churchill, and DeGaulle.
But now we mostly have ticker-tape parades for people who are paid outrageous salaries to put balls in motion - footballs, baseballs, soccer balls. Kind of pathetic, isn't it?
These are athletes that push their bodies to the limit and sacrifice their time to be with their families so they can represent their state or country.
If you were ever involved in athleticism, you would be able to relate.
As a country, we haven’t done anywhere near historical an accomplishment as land on the moon since that time.
What are you trying to honor? The invasion of area 51?

"Ticker tape technology became obsolete in the 1960s, as television and computers came into use for transmitting financial information. Modern parades utilize waste office paper and toilet paper that have been cut using conventional paper shredders. The city also distributes paper confetti."
I can think of some modern celebrants who would qualify for such a parade.
To say “put balls in motion” is pathetic.

Oh, puh-leeeze.
Push their bodies to the limit? You think it's something they should be pitied for? In comparison with, say, working in a coal mine or chicken slaughterhouse? And they don't do it to represent their state or country - they do it for the big bucks.
Not to mention that sports involves GAMES. It's something they learned for fun as kids, didn't required much brains, and were lucky to be able to monetize it for a fairly short work-life. Astronauts actually train for their work, and devote their lives to it. And even though we haven't reaped much in the way of direct benefit from it, there was in fact an element of serving the country.

51?
I was a high level athlete and still am an athlete.
"Pushing bodies to the limit" and "sacrificing time with family" applies to so many other MORE IMPORTANT JOBS than sports, you can't possibly use this as an argument for admiring pro sports.
