Murray Hill around 35th and First is simply TEAMING with rats.
Also that area is mosquito hell. I call that part of First Ave the Mosquito Coast.
Maybe all the construction? Combined with all the restaurants. A house was demolished on my block in the Bronx and the new construction on the site disturbed the dens of rats who previously had been less visible. I had to pour cement around the front crawl space to prevent rats from finding new homes. I had found rat turds on my new Jeeps engine. I bought poison stations as well and it's helped. Only thing my neighbors throw out the garbage twice a week and I am the only one who uses a garbage can.
To be fair, this data is based on reported rat sightings by residents to 311. It very well could be that people who care more about their neighborhood are more likely to report sightings.
Do you really think anyone in midtown is calling 311 when they see a rat?
I have been here for 10 years and walk a lot. I have never seen a rat on the streets.
Then you need to get out more and look, especially late/over night because they are out there.
Don't know if has changed but SE corner of 87th and Third where Maison Kayser throws out their trash was (or still is) full of rats. In fact they are on that block going down towards Second and beyond.
East 87th from First to York is another hot spot, in particular once you pass DSNY office mid-block going east. Walking down this block recently was amazed at how people had poured money into renovating those brownstones back into private homes. But each and every property had one or two bait stations in front. Lo and behold as got closer to York ave there was a big fat rat right out on the sidewalk! This was around 4PM, and if you see rats that early there is a serious issue.
Of course York to Carl Shurz park on many blocks including the park itself are full of rats.
Lexington from about 87th going north has a rat issue, especially corner where "Green Deli" or whatever that place is called. Have seen rats all along Lexington blocks either east or west in either direction from 87th to 96th.
It has to be the poor ethnic ghetto areas where the people who come from abroad do not come from a place that has great sanitary traditions like Washington Heights with its lower income residents from DR.
I work here, and there is literally garbage, dog ****/poop everywhere. People just dont care. They do not pick up after themselves. Even their apartments are dirty.
I see a lot of them at night in east harlem on my block (east 118th)
