Go a bit south into Soho to the Broome Street Bar. Good food and good windows for people-watching in the neighborhood. Burgers are excellent.

There are a lot of Japanese places with counter seats, so those are usually pretty good for dining solo.

Man, tough crowd. I just get eggs at WSD, at most a sandwich. Do people order real entrees at diners?

But, honestly, to answer the main question, when it comes to non-diner restaurants, there's really nowhere you can't go in the WV as a single. It's a little awkward if you're doing a lengthy tasting menu, but otherwise, no one's going to stare at you

This is what I was wondering.

I am so glad to hear this!

It's not a big deal for a single person to go out to lunch or dinner on their own in most places in the city. That's the beauty of the city. No one will give you a sideways glance if you're just doing your thing and going about your business, and it's anyone's city. You just fit right in.

I went to the Broome Street Bar with my assistant when I was working temporarily in the neighborhood in 2014. I went back another time by myself because I liked it and wanted one of their burgers.

They have a lot more than burgers, though.

NYC may be the best city in the country for being nice to lone diners. So take your pick.

That said, if you want to spend some money, Danny Meyers restaurants seem particularly welcoming, and I had a friend who used to love sitting at the Union Square Café bar for dinner.

Yes, it occurred to me that a more realistic question would have been "Are there any restaurants or diners in the area where a person dining solo would NOT be comfortable?"

Re Danny Meyer, I went to a wine-tasting fundraiser dinner for work a few months ago at Manhatta ($1500 a person, I didn't have to pay, of course, or I wouldn't have gone). The views are gorgeous, especially at sunset, and the food and wine was fantastic (as it had better be for $1500!) and Danny Meyer made an appearance and gave a short welcome. I took his pic with my phone and sent it to my daughter, whose bf is a chef. He gets man crushes on famous chefs, and she texted back that he said, "OMG, your mother is WITH HIM?" LOL. Well, we were in the same room...

I haven't been to Union Square Cafe, though.

Why do you think it is the best city in the country for being nice to lone diners?
