Can you recommend any diners or restaurants in the Village where a lone diner would feel comfortable?

That's it? Two places in the entire village?

Guess I'll lose some weight.

I think I have gone to that diner for breakfast, and it wasn't good!

Try Panchito's or Monti's on MacDougal. Panchito's is big, dark, cavernous and good. Monti's is old school and you can sit there and feel like a civilized human being for a while before going back out on the street. Also Pesci Pasta on Bleecker. It's a ten table, red checker table-cloth, family run joint with excellent food. I recommend the lobster tail fra diavlo. It won't run you much more than a diner these days.

Odessa's if you're cheap, the Remedy for better quality but slightly more. Slightly outside the Village, being in Alphabet City and Lower East Side specifically, but those places I've never had issues with. Otherwise, any place not trying to obviously be a loud bar/date spot I'd assume.

Mamoun's on St Marks?

I'd throw in any Japanese/Indian spot. Any place that's more to the core immigrant like like the Dominican place on Clinton and Rivington (I'm sure you can find others north of Houston).
