Don't worry, you'll see them in Scarscale, too. Coarse language and all. AND you get to drive the kids everyplace, since there's no public transportation. Look at some of the threads on the Westchester board about Scarsdale. There seems to be an attitude issue there.

That's a reason why I'm moving back to Long Island. If my fiance and I were to buy a house in the city, we would definitely send them to private schools. We both teach in the public schools and see what goes on behind the scenes that parents don't know about. Not the environment we would want our future kids in. For that reason, it would probably end up being cheaper paying the LI property tax, as opposed to city tax + 2 tuitions for private school.

I'll miss you, Rachael, but it does seem that Long Island is a good bet for you, hubby-to-be, and kids. Good luck.

Sorry, I just have to give some credit to NYC schools. I feel everyone thinks they are dangerous, horrible, etc. NYCDOE is messed up in many ways, as are many of the schools, but they are not all bad!!!!! If more people that cared stopped sending their kids to private schools and worked on improving their neighborhood schools, it would help A LOT.
I will send my children to public school here. Education begins at home anyway with the parents.
OK Sorry end rant. This is just my opinion. No disrespect to you. I just think NYC schools sometimes get a worse rep then they deserve. Not all schools are completely horrible...There are many great schools in Queens especially, which is where I live.

I guess this is really a very personal issue that only the parents can decide. On the one hand one wants to endorse public schools and put one's mouth where one's money is but on the other hand one wishes the best for one's child.
Even presidents have had to make that call and many end up sending their kids to private.

I don't have that much of a problem with the elementaries, it's the MS's and HS's I do. Your kid has to be one of the smartest kids in the city to get into a good public MS or HS. I'm not expecting my kids to be unintelligent, but my fiance has students who have 99% averages and didn't get into Bronx Science and Townsend Harris.
And in case my future kid needs special ed services, well, they will be nearly non-existent in the city schools. I have 3 kids who get speech twice a week. They're lucky if they get it once every 2 weeks. One of the kids is so severely speech impaired that I can't understand a word he says.
I couldn't talk right when I was a kid. I grew up in a really good LI district and got services everyday. My mom said if we had stayed in Queens, I wouldn't have gotten over my speech problem since she didn't trust the city to give me my services. maybe you don't notice it as much in MS, I don't know. I do in elementary since my kids are with me all day and a few of them have IEP's.
It all comes down to personal choice.

In all candidness, one has to admit that NYC does not have a great reputation regarding public schools. I've known so many who wished they could send their babies/little kids to parochial or private if they could afford it. The city's school system is hard-pressed to find teachers who are willing to deal with the social, psychological, behavioral, and educational issues of the NYC system.
But it is indeed commendable that there are teachers as gung ho as jax and as concerned as Rachael for the important jobs they are doing.
