Check out Secaucus, NJ. 6-15 min train to Penn Station from Secaucus Junction, you can find 1 BR apt for <$1500. We used to live there, crappy schools but it doesn't sound like that is an issue. Easier and faster than Weehawken/West NY (we also lived there as well). Alternatively, you can look for a 2BR unit with a roommate, try this site [url]www.roomster.com[/url] Good luck!

Move in with the relative who needs care. Or combine your rental budgets and find a new place outside of Manhattan.

When looking at Inwood, I wouldn't take anything left of Broadway. It's like a third world country over there - especially in the summer.

There are some available around $2000 in lower Manhattan so you might be able to find something if you raise your budget to $1800 for upper Manhattan. To be honest you should be living somewhere else with lower grocery store and laundry prices though if that’s your budget . I rented one off of the street literally recently.
