first time in new york
hello all,
I will travel to NY for the first time very soon ( end of april, for two weeks ) and i would like to know how is the kosciuszko station area in brooklyn ( in terms of safety, coming back late at night, etc ). i will stay at a friend's flat in kosciuszko st by the way ... my friend told me that's quite a rough area but that shouldn't be a problem for me ( not the kind to be afraid of sketchy places, but in the same time i like to avoid being in trouble as long as the situation permits it ); anyway, i think it's always a good thing to ask for some more advice ... many thanks!

yeah, i myself live in a big estate block in south london so i guess i shouldn't be too much out of my shoes .... anyway, i also forgot to mention that i will also venture in east NY cos my friend has his family there and they invited me for some nice african food ( i'm a white dude by the way ). so i would like to know if there are some streets for example to REALLY avoid ( i lived in lagos, nigeria some years ago and i can tell that if you dared to enter some areas, well,...you were about to lose at least your teeth and all your belongings, if no more )...basically, i will be sightseeing from morning till evening in as much places as i can, and this include also different neighbourhoods, not only the typical tourist spots. oh yeah, my friend told me the kosciuszko area is located in ENY, but it doesn't seem so .... sorry for my ignorance, but is this bed stu or bushwick?
thanks for the reply and the pa

Hi, liersykehus. For the first 90 minutes or so after you post, there's an edit button below and to the right of your post. You could have used it to add the missing "tience" to your post. Too late now, of course, but for future reference. And no one has to know there was a little error.
I'm not familiar with the neighborhood you'll be visiting, so I cannot offer advice in that regard. But I'm just full of other advice.

kosciuszko street is bed-stuy.
the problem with eny is that its such a big neighborhood, there's really not one place to tell u to stay away from other than the projects. just take the most direct route to your friend's house and be aware of your surroundings.

...and that's it, just back from NY today. well, what can i say except i really enjoyed brooklyn and all the other places i visited... though, still hard for me to understand the way some people in this forum use to describe some areas as dangerous or even worse as i ventured into a lot of them, and at any time ( sometimes really late in the night or early in the morning ). i was in brownsville, ENY ( sutter, belmont, pitkin, glenmore, miller and so forth... ), mott haven, hunts point, fordham in the bronx and some other ones. believe me, this is nothing in comparison of some places i've been in africa and even some parts of europe. i am also very grateful for the warm welcome and cool talks i had with the locals around bed-stuy and bushwick, lots of really brave and cool people! i think i will probably come back before the end of the year such i enjoyed this city.... nice folks, cheap food and clothes and so on ( i come from london and believe me, NY is VERY cheap in comparison! now i understand why so many brits are trying to relocate to NY .

I can't picture a British person getting robbed in America. Their accents are too distracting and charming. Once they speak, people just kind of stop in their tracks and their accent registers and it just diverts their attention away for a moment (and possible intention to rob them).

perhaps it would be, but ... i'm not british and my first language is french .
i found american accents far easier to catch than british ones ( cockney in particular still gives me headache, even after years spent in london ). and yes, i guess my funny french accent might have distracted those gangsta hoodies to rob me, god knows
