Soon, MTA buses will be carrying new equipment, surveillance cameras to keep drivers out of bus lanes.
Starting October 7th, the cameras will snap photos of bus lane blockers on the M15 Select Bus route, which runs between lower Manhattan and East Harlem on First and Second avenues.
Riders we spoke to are on board.
“They should be ticketed. Anybody who's parked there should be ticketed, just like anywhere else," said one rider
There are already traffic cameras that monitor bus lanes on Second (IIRC) from about the middle 60's until pass the bridge. Not that it does much good as drivers still block bus lanes.
Don't know what they've done to put fear of God into drivers, but the bus lane on Madison seems very well respected. Even nights/over nights nearly all drivers keep to the left until past 58th where it ends.
I wonder what they'll do when they realize that half the time somebody blocks a bike/bus lane, it's a NYPD car
Actually rarely see NYPD blocking a bus lane/stop. Majority of time it is a yellow taxi or Uber/Lyft, usually the latter who seem be totally ignorant of NYC traffic laws/how to drive in city.

Yes on second avenue, but not many other places. Madison bus lanes are double and well structured, there's nothing ambiguous about knowing you're not supposed to be there at all times except to turn. The real problem is in places like 125th in Harlem where idiots think double parking is a birthright. This is a great idea, forget the camera on the light poles, put them on buses instead.

Cameras are already one the busses.
On the select service busses I take they have cameras installed at the front and sides. I thought they were already using the cameras to issue tickets for bus lane blocking as stated on their site. (after watching the video you can see that M15 select bus have the same 5 cameras as well. 1 dash cam inside, and 4 outside on each corner of the bus but the other B44 SBS busses didnt have them)
But as pointed out before, what are they going to do when they realize the ones who mostly block the lanes are government workers using their personal car with a placard on the dash like they do all over the area by the courthouse on 161st street.
Im just waiting for kids to start putting gorilla glue in the MetroCard slot on SBS kiosks that allows you to pay before boarding similar to what the MetroCard swipers use to put a liquid on the touch screen kiosks to make the screen not work.

This is good and directed enforcement. If you're not blocking a bus when you're in the bus lane then great. If you're blocking a bus, then the bus sees it and you get penalized.
