The Jewish neighborhoods of Brooklyn are very diverse economically, with - yes - million dollar homes, but also moderately priced rental apartments and coops.
True but the idea that they're largely "working class" is wrong IMO. People here love to use the term "working class" to describe non-hipster whites regardless of their income.

Agreed. I think people here confuse blue-collar whites as working class. Many ethnic whites have moved into middle class via jobs like NYPD, FDNY, ConEd, Verizon, local unions etc, but people here refer to them as working class.

Regardless of terminology, this group has less and less of a presence in the city every year.

Agreed on both. A lot of their kids are going to college too, even if they didn't themselves.

Opinion:
New York ranks #8 as the most segregated city in the United States.
It does not matter if all the White people were to leave. There would still be isolated pockets of the
the remaining skin color communities as well as mixed neighborhoods scattered across the five boroughs.
People choose to live where and with whom and the only color that wins in the end is the color $$$ green!

There are many Archie Bunkers alive and well today and they come in colors red, black, brown and yellow.
nuff said...........

Everybody stifle yourselves on this Archie Bunker thing.

Comparing "working class whites" always to Archie Bunker is like saying Al Jolson in blackface singing Mammy represents all blacks. Archie was a Vaudville cartoon of a man with a ridiculous outdated accent even for the 1970s. He was a minstrel show for the anti-white liberals of the early 70s.

Stereotyping & equal opportunity don't mix, just a reminder.

All right, well you know what they say about stereotypes. If you need to use one then turn the stereo up loud.

Not true.

I'm not a hipster white, and neither is my husband, but I wouldn't describe us as working class due to our occupations/income. I would describe us as middle class.

However, there are plenty of working class/blue collar people in Midwood, who live in the rental buildings, which tend to be quite moderately priced. They live there because it's easier to afford a rental apartment in Midwood than in northern Brooklyn. There are plenty of cab drivers, retail/service workers, single mothers with kids, etc.

By the way, I would say that blue collar and working class mean the same thing.

I should have specified "non-immigrant, non-hipster whites". Whether or not it it actually true, I do see people on here use "working class whites" to refer to them, often in a romanticized fashion. But I would say those of them who haven't left NYC yet tend to be middle class, and their kids even more so.
Blue collar people can make over 100k per year, that is not working class. Meanwhile someone working at a JC Penny is technically white collar but very likely working class.
