"NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) — A young child is in critical condition after being brutally attacked by a homeless person in Queens.

According to police sources, the homeless man was on Metropolitan Avenue in Kew Gardens when he picked up a six-year-old boy and then slammed the child’s head into the pavement just before 5 p.m.

hat suspect has been arrested by officers responding to the violent scene. He has been taken to Jamaica Hospital for a mental evaluation as the investigation continues.

The child was rushed to an area hospital with what police describe as serious head injuries.

The vicious attack comes just days after another homeless man was arrested in Manhattan for allegedly murdering four men as they slept on the streets of Chinatown.

Kew Gardens is still very safe. Unfortunate this happened, but this is a big city and anything can happen anywhere.

Some people really shouldn't be on the street.

Nothing to see here. deBlasio and O'Neil will blame the victim.

How horrible. I feel so bad for this boy and his parents.

Obvious the city is failing it's residents by allowing so people to remain homeless and not adequately helping them.

This man is known in the area for menacing people just minding their business. He is not new. He is part of the homeless problem in Kew Gardens, that supposedly doesn't exist.

I didn't say it did. I said he is known in the area and he is. You tend to know these things when you frequent an area...

If a homeless person approaches one of my kids, they better hope they are able to defend themselves very violently because what they are about to experience is going to severely alter the rest of their lives.
