Let them continue thinking that Sweden is a lily white utopia.
Sweden is a modern, multicultural society. With multiculturalism there do come some problems and Sweden is experiencing those growing pains, but to suggest that we couldn't have a similar social welfare system because our countries are so demographically different is no longer really the case. Europe is diverse and, quite frankly, it has been diverse through MANY points in history. Sicily for example is probably one of the places in the world that has seen the comings and goings of so many different peoples, etc. and the last time I checked, that's Europe ;-).
There's no such thing as a free lunch. Someone's paying for it.

But what I'm talking about, specifically, is healthcare. Why would any single American *want* to leave the hospital with the prospect of going into medical debt or worse being forced to declare bankruptcy? Why are we so accepting of this broken system?
Can you guys just listen for once and let the actual people who have experience living in Europe--i.e. me and NYWriterDude--speak on this? Pretty please?
I just got back from the Netherlands on September 20th, actually. While I was there my boyfriend and I were walking and I suddenly doubled over in pain. Eventually, I asked him to call an ambulance. I was brought to a new, clean hospital with a staff that spoke flawless (and I mean flawless) English. Not once was I asked about my insurance or how I would pay. Instead, I was seen immediately and helped promptly. I was given pain medication, a sonogram, a scan, and was treated with dignity and respect. They discovered I had a kidney stone, I got two prescriptions and was sent on my way. I never received a bill.
Years ago, my mom was visiting me in Italy as I was living there at the time. On the plane coming to me, she tripped and broke her wrist. We immediately went to the hospital where they took x-rays and she was given prompt medical attention. She was given pain medication, her wrist set, and she enjoyed the rest of her vacation. She never received a bill.
WHY WOULDN'T AMERICANS WANT THIS?!?! What is wrong with us?
Are you saying that American hospitals wouldn’t provide those services? If you have health insurance, you won’t necessarily pay for it, your costs will be covered. The goal should be to give everybody health insurance.
Sweden would be vastly better of if it has not encouraged immigration. It was a nice stable, safe, prosperous society. And now it's in danger of flushing that down the toilet in the name of political correctness.
And the "comings and goings" as you describe them were invasions. It had so much foreign domination over the centuries that they developed a separate underground government. We know this now as the Mafia.
Where any level of socialism in Europe worked, it was in countries with highly homogenous demographics and a strong work ethic. Anyone who just lazed around in the social safety net would probably face a lot of pressure to get off their a$$. Neither of these are the case here.

Excerpt: Ocasio-Cortez to Endorse Bernie Sanders in LIC
Opinion: Ohhhhh.................I've been blind sided. ( sarcasm ) Inside joke.
Sorry Bernie. If life itself results in heart ailments there is no way
in heck it could stand up to the daily rigors of the White House.
Stick to lecturing at Nursing Homes. Less stress.

Again, failure to understand the point.
Wouldn't you rather your money go to healthcare than other less important things like, I don't know, sucking the middle class dry to the benefit of the ultra rich?
