Uniqlo (UNIQLO TOP - UNIQLO) in SoHo. It's the "Japanese Gap." The have a lot of affordable cashmere during the winter. Zara (ZARA) is the "Spanish Gap." They have several locations. Both stores have better quality clothing than H&M (in my opinion).

Kenneth Cole (Shop Kenneth Cole New York and Kenneth Cole Reaction - Kenneth Cole Official Site.) is a good New York store (I really like their shoes). I go to the one near Union Square. It's about the same price point as Banana Republic, but the style is a little edgier.

Those are the somewhat affordable mainstream options. Most well dressed people pride themselves on shopping in smaller boutiques. Once you move here you can take advantage of one of the greatest New York institutions: The Sample Sale. It's where designers sell their samples at knock-down prices. Real New Yorkers never pay retail. You just have to know when and where to go. There's always a bargain somewhere.

And just for kicks:

Odin (ODIN New York) is the downtown younger men's clothing store. If you want to spend $300 on a flannel shirt, that's the place to go.

Fordham Road in the Bronx for the budget conscious.

On the other hand, most retailers have online shopping as well. It's big sale time, so either way, the holiday weekend will be the best time to buy.

Men's Wearhouse seems to have come down in price...saw a commercial recently and though they are normally very pricey, it looked good.

What's your definition of "New York" style? That can mean many things. You could shop at J Crew, but because its a national chain you'll need to pick the right items to fit what you're looking for.

That being said, I also recommended Sample Sales, especially if you are looking for quality items at bargain prices. Loehmanns, Century 21, and Daffy's are pretty good. Daffy's has a lot of unfamiliar brands compared to the others which is not a bad thing.

H&M is a good place to test out trendy items without committing too much $$$.

A lot of my friends and co-workers love DSW and Syms. Century 21 isn't bad either but sometimes they have a lot of clothes I personally don't like. It sort of depends on the day and what they bring in. Macy's is an option, they almost always have things heavily discounted. I would also look into Burlington Coat Factory. I know Macy's and Burlington might seem a bit too boring, but they are big stores and from my experience they almost always have some really cool things at good prices.
