Fordham Bronx?
My family and I are on our way back to NY and I am thinking of getting an apartment of my own. I know some family friends that can get me an apartment on Beaumont Ave, or E.187th, or E.183rd (that area). Anyone have any advice on this area, etc? Haven't been here in a long time. Thanks

if you like urban ghetto living, then you've picked the right place, if you value safety, clean streets and a decent lifestyle, you should keep looking

Thanks, I heard it keeps getting worse but I wasn't sure how bad. I had a feeling it wasn't going to work out there. Is pelham parkway any better?

I don't know about it being in decline. Area has been ghetto for a while now. It seems better to me than when I would come out here in the late 80's and 90's. If anything with most areas of the city improving as of late I would say it's probably improving slightly. It is what it is. I've been living in Fordham a little over a year. It's ghetto I'm not going to sugar-coat it. But I've had a pleasant experience. The rent is very cheap here compared to the rest of the city. It's been perfect for me as a young single guy trying to save money. I think it's good for single people who are looking for a transitional spot for a year or two (well if you can find a nice building). It's horrible for families though. I can't even imagine trying to raise a kid in the Fordham area, or much of the Bronx for the matter.
I live in a really convenient spot and my building is super-quiet and I have good neighbors. I don't really have too many complaints. Some blocks are pure hell around here though. I haven't had to deal with that much because I don't have to go those hellish areas so I just avoid them.
So to sum it up, it has worked out for me, but I would not give the area an endorsement.

Horrible area Fordham. Yesterday there were was a triple stabbing that left one dead on Burnside and Valentine. The precinct (46th) by far has the most murders in the city with 8. The type of area that you would fear for your life. Pelham Parkway is much better.

In my experiences going over there, the area looks very ghetto and run-down. Some of those blocks off of East 183rd Street (Beaumont Avenue, Hughes Avenue) can definitely contend for some of the worst areas in the Bronx. Also, there is a strong gang presence (Blood) in the area. Not one of my top choices to live. Pelham Parkway is a much safer neighborhood.

Yeah, but the area around 180th and Hughes/Crotona, Monterey Houses are crip. The strongets crip presence in the Bronx is there. More to the west it's blooded out.
I agree with you. When passing through 183rd and Hughes, Kennedy Fried Chicken place was packed with drug dealers....a hell of alot graffiti too. Scary stuff.
