This is more of an up-and-coming neighborhood- Close to the Cathedral of St. John the Divine (look for the stained glass window depicting Jack Benny playing the violin), Columbia University and St. Luke's Hospital. Look behind you at night, but somewhere where I (a woman) would go (and have gone) at night.
Up-and-coming is a good way to describe that area. Lots of amenities and a #1 subway stop a block over on Broadway. This is actually where the Upper West Side stops and Morningside heights begins I think. I too am a women, and I would live there.
I believe that is Morningside Heights to be exact. Which is part of Harlem. Personally I don't consider that a bad area. There are a few blocks that aren't great and there seem to be a bit more homeless around (I'm guessing it's a combo of there being a shelter around there and the parks) than other areas, but there are certainly much worse areas in the city. It's a convenient area. Your close to the UWS, parks, and good amount of public transportation, plus there is a good amount of stuff to do around there.
I lived there during a summer internship last summer. I really liked the area (i was a college student at the time). Lots of columbia students and not really shady at all. I felt completely safe coming home at night from bars. Nice, affordable restaurants that are around the area and very close the 1 train, which is nice.
I used to live in that area. W 110th st. is OK. You got the supermarket (Central Market) right there. A lot of spanish restaurants or chinese. On Broadway you'll find more. You close to central park, Morningside heights park and you have the B & C train right infront of you. At night it could look a little sketchy and there a lot more homeless people than on the eastside. Because the shelters are a few blocks north. But you'll be OK. Just don't jogg at night!
if you are a woman walking or living alone, purchase a sabrered.com device, which will unleash an earshattering sound when and if you feel menaced. the device is pretty economical, as well. if you don't have a burglar alarm in your apt., buy some fake one's to put on the door and your windows from ebay.com. at night, use uber, lyft, or a yellow taxi if you don't have a car. if you have a car, try to park it in a garage or at least in a lot. otherwise, within 3 years, it will be stolen, broken into, and/or smashed. buy the big yellow club theft device to put over its steering wheel.
