Pathmark
Trader Joe's? This food store is good if you have no idea how to cook, do not have the time to cook and eat a mostly prepared frozen food diet. Trader Joe's specialty is frozen meals, pre-made, sort of like a microwave restaurant in your kitchen. Very few basic foods available there at loss leader prices. This is sort of a yuppie store and not for someone on a strict budget.
If you are on a budget I suggest Pathmark (broken link), there is one near South Street Seaport on Cherry Street. They offer the lowest prices anywhere for groceries with the best sales in the universe, lots of buy one get one free deals. You can acquire the ingredients to assemble your own cooking masterpiece at the lowest possible prices. You can load up on inexpensive foods like produce, rice, pasta, soups etc etc.

If you're willing to travel (far) to $ave, try the big Fairway at 12th Ave. & 133rd St. It is popular with bargain hunters.

If you're in the Gramercy area, the obvious place is Met Foods, on Third Avenue near 17th. It's markedly cheaper than, say, D'Agostino or Gristede's.

Fairway is known for upscale gourmet quality ingredients and foods if that's the type of food you're looking to cook. But it's no bargain place to shop. Maybe when you compare it to Gristede's and Food Emporium you may feel you're a little ahead with Fairway which does have great cuts of meat and great selection of quality produce. For dry goods etc., Key Food and CTown are best bets if Pathmark is too far besides it's nearly impossible to do Pathmark by subway or bus.

how about fresh direct? I remember back then prices seems reasonable & it delivers to your doorstep? If you are hell bent on saving money. you can take a few stops over to queens or brooklyn's market
