I like visiting for the day. I live in CT so this is possible. I also like leaving at the end of the day : ) It's fun, in a stressful way.

I have found it relatively clean, and have had no safety problems-I feel quite safe there, even on the subway. Great restaurants, and things to see and do. My kids love it. I'm going next week, in fact. But, I could never live there, and haven't actually spent more than a day there since I was a child. It's one of those places a person should try to see in life IMO.

Went there so many times when I lived on the east coast for concerts, baseball games, museums, and shopping. Especially loved Greenwich Village. Much as I have enjoyed myself there, I never had any positive experiences staying overnight or for extended durations. NYC is definitely a place I would not want to live in, but it can be lots of fun for a day.

This is something that most people who have never been there or lived there don't realize. Too many people see shows like 'Friends' or 'Seinfeld' and move there without realizing that it is nothing like you see on TV. You will NOT get an apartment the like the one seen in 'Friends' unless you are filthy rich. What you can expect is a tiny (and I mean tiny) apartment/shoebox with a rodent and/or insect problem that will cost you 3-4 thousand dollars a month. You will NOT have the money to go to all the cool clubs or restaurants you have heard about unless you are filthy rich because any money you make will go towards paying for your shoebox and daily necessities.

That being said, it is an incredible city that everyone should try to see at least once in their life. And maybe if you win the lottery, or get an offer to be the CEO or CFO of a large corporation, a great place to consider moving to.

I saw that movie "the gangs of New York " and that guy
with that tall hat scared the **** out of me.

Seriously though I have considered New Hampshire (outside of Boston)
If we check it out we will be in the neighborhood.
Will I find Cub fans in N.Y. ?

I like visiting NYC...the culture and entertainment is great! But it's not my favorite place on earth.

And I wouldn't want to live there (much too hectic and stressful [and dirty] for everyday).

Ya, but it's the largest city in the US.

Tell that to the 8.5 million people who live there who would all probably agree that living in NYC is far better than living in your flyover state. Living in New York generally isn't appealing to suburban middle America. It's more of a European-like city.

Hint: expensive cities are expensive because they're desirable.

No, no, it really isn't. No. I love NYC, I grew up near it, lived in or near it for most of my life and will likely go back at some point and will defend it for, like, ever. Aside from the fact that most people use public transit, New York is not like Europe. New York was founded for no other purpose than to make money. Its astonishingly diverse and almost-as-astonishingly dirty (even in nice neighborhoods). Its central district is filled with skyscrapers. It has an almost blithe disregard for its own history. Its population is famous for workaholism.

New York is not like Europe. Its like America on speed.

(I'm not even going to respond to the rest of your post, but rest assured, fellow Americans, most New Yorkers do not truly feel that way)
