Tell that to the 8.5 million people who live there who would all probably agree that living in NYC is far better than living in your flyover state. Living in New York generally isn't appealing to suburban middle America. It's more of a European-like city.

Hint: expensive cities are expensive because they're desirable.
Please don't comment on things you don't know, like what it's like to live in a 'flyover' state. Ya did it, again! Hint: 8.2 million...getcha facts straight, kid! typical...

Its astonishingly diverse and almost-as-astonishingly dirty (even in nice neighborhoods). Its central district is filled with skyscrapers. It has an almost blithe disregard for its own history. Its population is famous for workaholism.

New York is not like Europe. Its like America on speed.

(I'm not even going to respond to the rest of your post, but rest assured, fellow Americans, most New Yorkers do not truly feel that way)

I said NY is more EUROPEAN-LIKE compared to most cities.

And please don't tell me what is considered European-like, since you know I am from Spain and have lived in London for 10+ years, I think I should know what is classified European-like than someone from a flyover state who has probably never step foot in Europe, LOL.

I know more about New York than you have. In fact, my father has an apartment in New York on West End Avenue on the Upper West Side and most of NY is clean, his neighborhood is beautiful. Did you not have the drive to make it in New York? Did you "settle" for your flyover state? Your jealousy and bitterness really shines in the "Its astonishingly diverse and almost-as-astonishingly dirty (even in nice neighborhoods)" since dirt has no relevance to the dialogue seeing that the major cities like London and Paris are for the most part, dirty (they are large cities, after all)

Woah, what on earth are you talking about? I have no bitterness towards New York whatsoever. I was just observing that its dirty - it has a lot of litter, even in nice areas (okay, West End Avenue is relatively clean, but places like Alphabet City, Chelsea, the Financial District, let alone the outer boroughs, can be pretty dirty). Personally, I've never had a problem with this, I was making an observation. It doesn't mean the city doesn't have many beautiful neighborhoods. I love New York.

I think you ought to refrain from jumping to conclusions about individuals and their lives and how they feel about their home and how much they know or don't know about it based on one particular message that was a response to one particular thought (about which reasonable people can disagree) on an internet message board. It would also be nice if you would stop belittling the "flyover states," but hey, you're entitled to your opinion on that one. Aside from that, I'm done here.

New York is a great place and isn't like any other place I've been to. I've been to alot of places and nothing compares, Toronto might come close. There is so much to do there and there is never a dull moment when I visit. I can understand why it is so expensive, people from all over the world want to live there. As far as myself living there, thought about it a few times and might make the move in a few years. But in the meantime, I will visit as often as I can and have a good time with my NYC friends.

:: yaaaawn :: Another stereotype. This is true in some industries but far from universal.

My last trip to London, if it hadn't been for the red double-decker buses, cars on the wrong side of the road and preponderance of English accents, I would have hardly realized I'd left home. Truly. Gaps, FootLockers, BodyShops (okay, an original British company), PizzaHuts, Starbucks, Ben & Jerry's. Why bother leaving the West Side? Actually, it was a good trip, but I was shocked at how in my 25 years between visits, the cities had become so much more alike.

I'd go back, though. There's no way to get Fortnum & Mason's Lime Marmalade here.

I have always lived about a half hour away from NYC, have friends there, and I must say, it is, indeed, an overrated city. Sorry...fifteen, twenty years ago it was fun but now, after the reign of Generalismo Bennito Guiliani, it's now, believe it or not, kind of a boring place.

I had more fun in a week in Austin than I would have in a month in NYC. Sorry, but the big apple is not the place it use to be...it went from mohawks, punk shows, goth chicks and beatniks to a bunch of barstars going to the "it" club sipping the "it" cocktail listening to the "it" song and wearing the "it" outfit...all the while they are so full of IT! I'd take Austin or Portland anyday...and let's face it people, NYC does not have, has never, and never will be able to top Berlin, the REAL capital of the world when it comes to overall fun factor.

If you are young, alternative thinking, and like FUN, than NYC is not the best city for you...alas, the "Sex and the City" crowd has bushed the "Bauhaus and Agnostic Front" crowd out a long time ago. I actually know someone who moved from NYC back to BOISIE IDAHO because Boisie is more fun and has a bigger punk rock and alternative scene...you can thank Rudy *41* shoots Guiliani for that one.
