The New York Road Runners (NYRR) announced on Monday that it will host a field of 33,000 runners for the 50th running of the famed New York City Marathon on Nov. 7.
The number — which was come to with COVID-19 health and safety protocols in mind — was decided by New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo and New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.
“This will be an unprecedented and historic year for the TCS New York City Marathon as one of the most iconic New York sporting events makes its return,” NYC Marathon race director Ted Metellus said. “As we stage a safe and memorable race for the 50th running, this year’s marathon will showcase our great city’s strength, inspiration, and determination.”
It’s a triumphant return for the marathon, which was canceled last year because of the pandemic, as the 33,000 expected runners is more than half of the usual 55,000 participants who take part under normal circumstances.
I kind of feel like once you reach the 10s of thousands, what is the point of limiting it?
I agree but I'm excited. When I first started doing it there was less then 30K finishers. It was much more enjoyable then. So I welcome the smaller cap but I'm sure it will increase the price.
I wonder how they're going to decide who gets to run. It's already somewhat hard to qualify even before the cap.
I assume it will mostly be people who paid and were qualified last year.
We had to submit a survey of our preference for what year we wanted to run it. This year, 2022, 2023.
You may not get your first choice though.
I "should" be a lock in though regardless because I'm a legacy member. Once you become legacy status you get in every year for the rest of your life. Still have to pay of course but you are suppose to always have a spot.

Is this your first time?

No I'm a legacy member. To be a legacy member you have to have completed at least 15 NYC marathons.
Woah, congrats! It seems particularly insane to me because I hate running with a passion but I know runners love it with equal fervor.
Hopefully you'll get a spot this year!
