Default Finding Apartments

What is the best way to find apartments and/or roomates in New York? I'm not from around there, so I can't depend on walking around the city to find a place. What are the best websites or services to help find an apartment, and do you recommend using a broker?

I would suggest to find agent/broker who is going to work for you, can e-mail pictures of the apartment and full info. I worked with my agent like this. I am currently in FL and moving to NY in 2 weeks. Never done any trip to NY during searching for apartment.

Thanks for the responses. How much does a broker normally cost in total? I haven't worked with one before so i am unfamiliar with the prices.

Many charge 12% of the first years rent I think, I don't remember seeing any above 15% when I was looking. It's crazy expensive.

They usually charge 1 month rent (we paid 1 month rent), sometimes 12-15% of the yearly rent. But I would not trust craigslist if you try to rent something long distance - they have a lot of scams.
