I am a teacher considering a move to NYC. I have read various posts on this site and was wondering if there are any NYC teachers to whom I could ask questions regarding salaries, apartments, taxes, etc. My salary in NYC would be somewhere around $63,000... I think. I have a friend who lives in Manhattan (upper East) with her husband and children. They assure me that they could help me find a rent stablized studio apartment for $1000 per month or less in Manhattan. I find this really difficult to believe, especially after reading posts here. I am alone, not married, no kids... just me and my two kitties. I am not a big partier so I certainly would not be going out all the time. I do enjoy going out to dinner a couple of times per week. I don't think I would have a problem finding a job as I am certified in elem ed, ESOL and hearing impairment (special ed). I have 13 years experience and have 4 years of international teaching experience under my belt. I don't mind living on a budget but don't want to feel totally poor either. I know a car is OUT. I am hoping to have anyone, but especially some NYC teachers, respond. Thanks so much!

I am an ESOL teacher in NYC. I think that with your certifications you should have your pick of schools and there are some very nice elementary schools around, depending on your philsophy.
I cannot imagine that you would be able to find a $1000 rent stabilized studio in Manhattan. Does your friend have some special connections? Its hard to find a studio for that price anywhere on the island, even in the far north or trendier parts of Harlem. In Astoria (Queens, about 10 minutes from the city) you should be able to find a studio for around 1100.
