[SIZE=2]This long-weekend will be my first trip to NYC (woohoo!!). Food always comes the top of the list for me, and I would like your suggestions about places I could grab some local eats. Im not looking at pricey table-cloth places, just something local & delicious (and famous helps too)!
Pizza/Bagel/Burgers/BBQ etc

Am I missing something? You want burgers, pizza and bagels? Well, Tal Bagels are the best in the city, in my opinion. The rest of that stuff, it seems to me, you can get anywhere in the US....

As with most things NYC, the hype over local NYC food is just a product of the NYC media machine. I find the local food to be overpriced and overrated.

Check out the Zagat guide and reserve lunch at some of the top NYC restaurants that have prix fixe, 3 course lunches. It's a good deal for great food from some of the world's best chefs.

For pizza, I recommend Two Boots. They have an amazing spicy sauce and a fantastic variety of fresh ingredients like vidalia onions, sweet pepper pesto, and savory soppresata (sp?). There are several locations around the city, so check their website to see which ones are near where you will be staying.

If you go to Grand Central, you can hit lots of local favorites on the dining pavilion - a slice from Two Boots, cheesecake from Juniors, samosas from Spice Cafe, pulled pork from the BBQ joint, and something sweet from Little Pie Company.

You could also eat your way through Chelsea Market.

Oh and Shake Shack is open for the season. You have to get a Shack Stack - a fried portobello mushroom stuffed with cheddar and munster on top of a cheeseburger (or two?) with lettuce and tomato on a brioche roll. Heaven.

I do to, especially in the city. I loved the food in Boston when I wentthere for a visit. They have lots of cute little restaurants there and seafood is great.

Yes, you CAN get in anywhere (aside from the bagels), but it doesn't taste the same everywhere. I love trying food in other places, because it has a different taste to it.. although sometimes it's not always a good taste, lol.

The food in and of itself is good in NYC..but it is the total experience that you cannot get elsewhere that makes it so unique, special, and interesting. There are some good eats everywhere in the country..the question is...can you walk to them all in your town? Are the owners right off the boat..adding to the experience? Are you dining with a variety of people, races, income levels, classes, speaking different languages all together? Are you able to watch the NYC life right outside the restuarant as you dine? Can you then scoot over to the adjacent restaurant/bar to have a completely different experience, with completely different people, different vibe,..and on and on. This is what makes dining in the city special...which has nothing to do with the media machine.

Ace Rock...as I stated on another thread...sounds like you might enjoy sometime in good'ol arkansas...where you can get the lovely chatter at the cash register...nobody will rob you...and you will have plenty of "howdy sirs" everywhere you go. Enjoy!

Regarding the thread, you can enjoy a variety of good eats in Hells Kitchen...thats great for a first timer as there is a variety of good eats of all kinds in a very small area...and the crowds are diverse and cool...and you can easily duck into some decent bars as well...they cater to all kinds there.
