Hey everyone.

I'm going to go to school in August on 125th street directly across from the Apollo Theater. I'm from Florida so I DEFINETLY don't know much about the area.

Now, what I know is:
The 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and A, B, C, D trains all have stops in that vicinity (correct?) Also The Metro-North stops somewhere there too? (Got this off Wikipedia so feel free to correct me, lol)

I'm trying to find a place anywhere that will get me to that school either by walking or by mass transit. I listed the trains so that it'll help finding places close to those trains. I am a female, so I am definitely looking for a place that will be decently safe (even though nothing can be totally safe). Also, i'm going to be a poor student so hopefully I can find something in the $1000/month range? Anything will be greatly appreciated.

The best trains would be the A, B, C, D since they all stop at 125th and St. Nicholas. The next best would be the 2 and 3 which are on Lenox Avenue. The other trains are further away from the location that you will be going to school at. As far as places too live it depends on how far you want to travel. That would give people a better clue on where to recommend.

Any place that is kinda safe. Basically I am looking for a place relative to Safeness and then distance. Bronx, Brooklyn, in Manhattan, Queens, whatever. I would however like to keep the commute kinda short. My parents want me to live in Astoria and absolutely abhor any idea of me living in harlem because I'm a girl. I hope this helps. I'm pretty open to all ideas! Thanks everyone!!

Astoria would be cool but the travel would be more extensive due to having to transfer trains and, I believe, it would be the 4,5,6 line that you transfer to. Those trains will leave you on Lexington Avenue but you can always catch a crosstown bus and if you don't mind walking, you can do that also. For 1000 per month, you can probably find something in the Bronx but I am unsure of which areas would be good. Riverdale may be a possibility as well as Throgs Neck. Since you will be going to school in Harlem, I would not recommend Brooklyn due to the travel time but you can also look in upper Manhattan around Inwood. Best of luck.

If you lived in Astoria, you can take the M125 bus across the bridge to 125th Street. The commute would be very fast.

Good post. People need to realize the MTA's extensive bus system

Check out the Inwood neighborhood, which is the northern tip of Manhattan. You can find 1BR apartments in your price range, and it's a decent area -- plus, you can take the M100 bus, A or 1 train directly to 125th Street.

I didn't even think about the bus there. It used to be the M35 that ran between Harlem and Astoria with stops on Randall's and Ward's Island but I see that is no longer an option. The bus that you are referring to is the M60 I think, that runs from LaQuardia to Harlem and that would be a viable option and make the trip from Astoria to Harlem much easier.

As confirmation, it IS the M60. You might want to find out how long the ride is though.. that doesn't seem like a short ride to me, but who knows, I could be wrong. =\

I meant to say the M60... I was thinking of 125th Street as I wrote the post
