My rent expires soon and I need to find a place for July. I def. don't want a roommate so I need a single/studio, in the price range of 1400 to around 1800. Some of my friends say it's "impossible" but i feel that they haven't really looked hard enough. The place has to be in Manhattan and I work in Midtown (on Ave. of Americas), so proximity or subway access is important.

Ideally, the place would be in Midtown, so I can walk to work. Size isn't that important.

Is this possible? ...or will I have to live in Hoboken or pay 2000+?

Also, I was thinking of registering with Rent-Direct for this. Any kind of advice/comment would be helpful. Thanks!

Oh yeah... and one more thing. The area has to be safe, so Harlem will not qualify.

If you're considering even Hoboken, then why not Astoria? It's safe, lots of restaurants, and you can get a very nice studio or 1-BR place for $1700, and a generally easier commute to Midtown than Hoboken.

Otherwise, you can probably get something in the Upper East Side, though $1700 is fairly low for a decent studio.

My home is in New Jersey and I go there frequently, on the weekends, so I'd prefer to be closer to NJ, which is why Queens might not work out.

Upper East Side far away from the subway towards York Ave you can still find studios in that range. At that point you may as well be in a borough , though since it will be quicker to get to your work than that area. If you are really lucky you may find a place in Hell's Kitchen for that price.

If you are in the "Manhattan at all costs" mindset then you better be ready for the "at all costs" part.

thanks for the response. Any other advice would be appreciated.

Also, does anyone know if rent-direct.com is legit?
