Coming to New York on 6wks vacation and would love a studio or a one bedroom to rent for the time. Failing this can I have someone who is willing to have a room mate. Thank you

You can try the Greenpoint YMCA. They may have deals for extended stays.

there should be plenty of deals on craigslist new york city sublets & temporary classifieds - craigslist
though you might need a hotel for a night or two while you secure the place, get the keys, meet the people etc.
