Yep..south bronx and east new york are the WORST. I've been to Washingon Heights and it's crappy but not ANYTHING compared to these ghettos. I went thru the projects in East New York Brooklyn and got called a "cracker" by a little black boy.
Wonderful lol.
But yeah, I'm curious like you too.

I was born and raised in Appalachia. First there are (just like any other region or city) areas of extreme poverty. In rural areas there are people who do not have electricity or indoor plumbibg BUT that is not at all common. My grandmother lived in rural Virginia on a farm my entire life. They and their neighbors have had phones, electricity and indoor plumbing since at least the 1940's and they were very very poor.
Also, there are projects in the Appalachian city I live in (pop @ 50,000 about 150,000 as the 2 largest nearby cities are close so really area kind of one big place). They can be dangerous and they have serious and frequently violent crime. Am I afraid to go there? No but if I a walking throught there I certainly am cautious and more conscious of my surroundings and the people around me. There are also very rural areas that can be dangerous especially to an outsider. Frankly, I feel safer in the projects in the city than I would in some very rural areas. I lived in Dallas TX for a few years and wandered on foot and by car around some of its seemingly rough areas and had no problems.
Give Appalachia a break though. Just like NYC is not like you see it on TV and in films, Appalachia is nothing like what people see in films and TV.

Did you know that 50% of the Bronx is on some kind of plublic assistance? That may be why it's considered so poor in comparison to other places.

Well good luck and be sure to dress accordingly, dont forget to lose the camera hanging around your neck when your coming from sightseeing. Oh Bedford Stuyvesant has it pretty bad too. Last year around this time 2 police officers were shot and one died in the line of duty there. Many shootings can potentially occur if your there. Have fun

Are you joking? Jackson Heights is bad? Corona? Yeah, maybe parts of Jamaica/South Jamaica but that is just a hoot. I lived in Corona. Corona is a craphole, filthy, and full of very poor, illegal immigrants but it's not dangerous to walk through, just depressing. Jackson Heights on the border of Corona is similar but there are also a lot of very nice blocks wth gardens and landmarked buildings where people are well-to-do. I don't believe you know what an adrenaline rush is.
