What about Morris Heights? Is a dangerous place? There are any gangs in the area? Is safe to walk from Mt Eden Subway station (N 4) to Popham avenue in the night or is better take a taxi? Thanks everybody.

I'd rather choose the death penalty than walk through Morris Heights. Morris Heights is a truly awful neighborhood that has few comparisons. The 46th precinct patrols the area.....which has the leading homicide totals in the city. Morris Heights burned to the ground in the 70's and now consist of mostly rehabbed tenements. With about a 60% Hispanic and 30% black population it is minority dominated and extremely poor with a income of about $17,000. True definition of ghetto, in every sense of the word.
Mt Eden station is awful. Lots of shooting and stabbings. You wouldn't make it to Popham alive. Take a taxi. For your own good.

I actually walk that way a bit from Mt. Eden to 175th.. it's a bad neighborhood, no doubt about it, but you should actually be fine if you keep your awares. My friend says there's a bus that leaves you like across the street on MLK Blvd, but I'm not sure which one it is.

Wow. A white person from Nebraska wants to see the ghetto in NYC. How dare you? You know a lot of people struggle out here. Yes i do know that there are a lot of minorities that bring the drama here but there are a lot of working class people with children to support that want to do the right thing! You wanna see the ghetto?? Go to BK. I live in Bed Stuy. Take the A or C train to Utica or Ralph Ave. See if thats ghetto enough for you.

Look, I understand you don't want to be an "average tourist" - everytime I go to NYC I get stuck with someone who's never been, which has resulted in having to spend every trip doing the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, the Met, Times Sq., etc., And that definitely gets old quick. BUT if you don't want to do the average tourist things, there are plenty of places you can go without getting yourself involved in potentially dangerous situations. Manhattan alone is 23 sq miles - there are 5,000 things you could do in NYC without being an "average tourist". It is so easy to tell when someone is a tourist. I don't even live in the city and it's easy to tell - no matter where you are. If you don't look like you live in a certain place, people know you're either lost or a tourist. It is a bad idea. That's why so many people here are making fun of your posts because it's just such an obviously bad idea.
To give you an example, I went to college in Baltimore - on one side of the college, there were nice, expensive houses. On the other side, just a few blocks over, you've got students not listening to what they've been told, and going to places where they shouldn't be. Even in groups - 4-5 people, there is still trouble - weekly reports of assault/muggings. You came to this board with a question and you've got all these people who live in the city, who know what certain areas are like, where not to go and you're not listening. The people here who are telling you not to go are saying that for a reason. You've got to understand that "I'm from the Midwest and want to go explore NYC ghettos" sounds as ridiculous as if I were to say, "I'm half black and I want to go explore the deep south to see what the KKK is really like". It just sounds ridiculous. If you're going to ask for the opinions of the people here because they know more about it than you, why would you only listen to half of the advice?
I'm just sayin'...

Yesterday I decided to stroll University Heights (above Fordham rd) and found myself in a very dangerous place......190th and Davidson avenue. You want to see ghetto? This block just off Fordham rd is one of the worst I've seen. First off the buildings are absolutely covered in graffiti, every inch of it. The streets are incredibly narrow and you had at least 70 people on the block, smoking weed, selling drugs, and blaring music. I was visiting a friend but couldn't help but feel uncomfortable. All of a sudden I hear a loud roar and see a van speeding through the narrow block. I think nothing of it until I see 6 police cars speeding after him. The sounds of siren, music, tires screeching and the smell of weed in the air almost made me vomit. That's not even the half of it. Behind the police cars is a private detective in a black van and he crashes with one of the parked cars and breaks is window but he continues. The women in the block are screaming and the kids are crying. By this time there's atleast 200 people on the block. Suddenly we hear rampant running and there are 15 police officers on foot running guns in hand. They yell to everyone not to move and about 20 more officers joined with the 15 and proceeded to check every inch of the neighborhood with flashlights. They closed off the street but I managed to escape.
That my friends is life in the hood.
University Heights and the Bronx in general is no joke.

I dont get you , what are you tryin to scare people away or somethin? Im sure alot of people on this board have similar stories they could post about their areas but they dont. I dont see what this is accomplishing.
