Default Co-op City Info

I've been considering getting a condo in Co-op City within the next two to three years. I go to Co-op almost every weekend as I'm a 20 minute walk away and I've heard the criticism that it's just a glorified, nicer PJ.

Anyone here lived in Co-op City for a sizeable time and could talk about the quality of life in these condos?

A condominium is NOT the same as a co-op. There are very big differences and before you embark upon this you need to familiarize yourself with those differences!

I have had friends who lived there and who live nearby. Co-op City is always described as an over-glorified collection of projects. Granted I haven't been there in a few years and when I have been I never experienced anything, but I understand there is a sizable Bloods gang population there.

Whoops. My bad - lack of sleep gets my wires crossed sometimes.

But my initial question still stands. I know all you have to do is pay for the space and pay a maitenance fee (something like $160 per room) but I just wanted to know if these apartments are worth slamming that much $$ down on them.

You get the money back once you move out..so you are not losing anything necessarily. Co-op city has lots of retail at you fingertips as you know...they feel like soviet style housing to me, but the apts are nice and some have decent views of the water. I would take the time and investigate yourself...it may be worth it. In fact, they are thinking of going market rate co-op, i.e. current residents, instead of just selling it back to the company and getting just there deposit back, will be able to sell it to anyone and make HUGE gains...3 bedrooms were appraised at about $350,000.

I just read the Times article I linked to. Wow, I had no idea about this complex. This is not your average coop, meaning the units are not market rate, etc. So even if you know all about the difference between a coop and a condo it will not prepare you for this particular complex.

It's a shame that trains are hard to get to from here. The closest station is at Pelham Bay Park, which is a long walk away. A lot of Co-op City residents seem to take the 5 to Gun Hill and take the 28 bus in or get off at Baychester and walk down as well.

Maybe the Bx12 BRT will remedy that a little since Bay Plaza is a terminus.

I have a co-worker who lives there. She has never said anything bad about it. She works with me in Midtown and takes an express bus. I think it's 40 minutes from there to Midtown. She said they are getting a Metro North station up there some time soon.

I moved to Co op city last November.. The apartments are nice electric is included and there is something similar to central ac so thats a plus.. On the minus, sell your car if you have one because parking is unheard of.. You can be placed on their so called "waiting list" for the garage with I am told can take a few years to get in.. I pay about 720 a month for my maintenance// The application process is a pain in the ass and they really check out your background.. Seems like once you get in though they dont giver a s**t who does what there ...Alll in all its a good deal for a big apartment but I dont really like the "complex feel"
