The area borders Longwood, a subsection of Hunts Point that has impressive, renovated brownstones..beautiful architecture and wide, tree lined sidewalks....I recommend a stroll if you enjoy the old brownstones as I do.

The area is predominantly Hispanic and Black..with a few , but growing artist community. Hunts Point is the birthplace of the current greening movement in NYC..they are leading the way in tree planting throughout Hunts Point and Mott Haven, have added miles of bike lanes, waterfront parks in the area, and are the first to have green rooves installed.

Recently the Bank Note Building, a giant factory directly across the highway from Tiffany and Southern Blvd in fact, that used to print money, was purchased and is being renovated and repositioned as artist space, lofts, gourmet food market, etc...see the link below:

BANK NOTE

If you would like some additional info...you can pm me.
There's more about Hunt's Point/Longwood. If you go to Simpson St (between Barretto and 163rd) they are building a new Grade 6-12 school called "Casita Maria Academy."

As for green space, you'll find it here and there. In addition to the waterfront parks in Hunt's Point, you have Bill Rainey Park on Longwood and Kelly Streets.

Speaking of Rainey Park, Longwood has a small Central American community in the neighborhood's western part (around Dawson St).

As for transportation, if you need the west side of Manhattan, you can walk over to either Simpson St or Intervale Av stations for the 2 and 5 trains. Plus, Hunt's Point/Longwood residents have been fighting for two things. First, they want to tear down the Sheridan Expressway for extra parkland and housing. Second, they want to have a Longwood Av crosstown bus route for a direct connection to the 2/5 trains at Prospect Avenue.

Default White Lady (gasp!) Going to the Hood

I am planning another visit out there this weekend to take photos for my website and stop in for lunch at one of the cute restaurants in Mott Haven. If I make it out alive (), I will posts pictures here.

(P.S. In case you haven't read my previous posts - I am being extremely sarcastic here as I have never felt in danger in my many travels around the Bronx)

(P.S.S. Please look back over SuperMario's posts - he either has an agenda to keep people out of The Bronx OR he isn't plugged in to all the great stuff happening in our neck of the woods)

I think I want to do a write up for Alexandria's or The Bruckner Bar and Grill, then snap photos of those gorgeous brownstones in Longwood and in your area of Mott Haven, and the Melrose area where all the new development is going on. And maybe ending up over by the Grand Concourse to snap some of those streets with all the brownstones....Maybe we could double up and between the two of us, we could get some great pictures to post here. People would be quite astonished to see what's out there.

I can forward you the pics if you like that I took...you may not know where all the brownstones are..they are not as clustered as you would think. I can also send you my Melrose pics as well which shows the new buildings/developments happening. I don't know how to post them though....maybe you can help?

Sure, if you want to forward them to me (via email), I will gladly post them on your behalf. Later, I can teach you how to do it via Photobucket.

But for now, sure send them on over. I may not be able to do it until this evening, but that would be great to get them up...
