I don't know if you noticed but the robbery numbers were pretty high for a lot "decent" neighborhoods too. So as you can see this whole thing can be very subjective.

IMO homicides are a better gage of how ****y a neighborhood is. But again, its subjective.
I disagree.

Homicides to me are not the best indicator for labeling a neighborhood high crime. Homicides can be random occurence, and many are due to drugs. So if you're not involved, then you would never notice. I think assaults, robberies and rapes are better indicators. Anybody can pull the trigger and kill someone. But it takes real criminals to rob, assault and rape. Usually if a neighborhood has high amounts of the latter three, they are "high crime". Of course, Homicides makes it that much worse. But I think as a single statistics, homicides are not good indicators.

Even the best neighborhoods have homicide increases, and yet they are stil considered safe. But if a "safe neighborhood" sees an increase in robberies, then there is a criminal element there that actually can affect people more. Homicides are thrown off as a freak occurence, but robberies, rapes, and assaults make the police presence stronger.

Another shooting in Mott Haven today. Ocurred in the vicinity of the Millbrook houses at 11 am. It's on Gothamist.

In other SoBro news:

Shooting at Union ave and Southern Blvd today a little after the Mott Haven one.

And SoBro continued it's upswing

Man what a Monday!
Its funny when you ask a homeowner and a renter how the neighborhood is.
The homeowner is always as optimistic as possible and the renter keeps it real.

SuperWario..please provide links for the shootings..I did not see any of them. And in other Sobro news, 200+ trees recently planted to help green the community. The Hub makeover is almost complete, with bike lanes, tree plantings, new medians, planters, and plazas. Bronx is also getting free bike racks across the borough to encourage a more green lifestyle! H&M looking to expand into the Bronx and it looking at Fordham, the Hub, and the new Gateway Center by Yankee Stadium. On the crime front, 2008 is looking to be another record low crime rate in the city, with 2008 coming in the 2nd lowest in the past 45 years, second only of course to 2007!

Gothamist Labs: Map

Shooting | E 136th St & Brown Pl Bronx, NY | 11/3/2008 10:56 a.m.

Shooting | Union Ave & Southern Blvd Bronx, NY | 11/3/2008 11:05 a.m.

You have no idea how bad Mott Haven is. Many of the guys in my hood think twice about heading "down there". And if we do go down, we'd be sure to have an army with us. Scary stuff. I dont know how you live there.

Joe...you are confused. You ask an educated adult about the neighborhood versus a "youth" and therein lies the discrepancy (among other things). I do not spend time talkign about all that is wrong with the borough because there aer 100 other people to do that..do we need 101 people? What I do is talk about the OTHER SIDE which too many either choose not to see or are incapable. Being a homeowner has nothing to do with it Joe..I am a 3rd generation resident..whether I was a homeowner or not..I ain't going anywhere. Super Wario however indicates he is biding his time and bolting the first second he has the opportunity...yet another differnece between us..I care about my neighborhood..he does not.

Funny how you used to use this years crime stats for the 40th precinct as proof as on how much Mott Haven has improved.

Remember this:

Quote:
Hey I checked Mott Haven's stats (40th precinct) and murders are down 15% versus this time last year....11 vs 13, and overall crime is down about 3%. With 2007 being the all time record low crime rate for the city since 1963 (when they started keeping records), and with murder up in NYC, Mott Haven is in fact going against the grain, decreasing murders and continuing the decreasing crime rate...even lower than last year's all time record.
And now that it has increased tremendously, you throw it aside.

That link doesn't work for me but I think it is my browser. I do not know how bad MOtt Haven is? Surely you jest...I have already indicated how deep my roots go..I live here because I choose to live here..not because I have to live here. And what is funny is that I would NEVER go to where you live because I find it infinitely more dangerous and unpleasant than Mott Haven...but then again nobody will win the "which neighborhood is scarier" argument. I have lots of 2/3 family homes, condos/co-ops coming online, parks, and an easy commute to the city....with new people coming in every day and that makes me happy. The only thing I find scary are those that choose to spread fear and ignorance and pass that off as "advise", when in fact they are only interested in keeping their rents low and other people (as in white people) out of "their" community.
